Ginger was born January 15th 1938 as Margaret Ann Holloway. A thoroughly modern woman, she was a regular on the downtown scene and ran with Jack Kerouac and his crew whom she met one night at the Kettle of Fish bar. It was Willem De Kooning who named her Ginger, not just because of her coloring but also because of her spicy personality. She loved jazz and late nights you could often find her at the Five Spot. Growing up in the aftermath of the war taught her to live her life to the fullest. And she did.The day after she graduated from Barnard, with honors, she went to work for Jane Jacobs and became a central figure in the the Greenwich Village Preservation movement. And sheʼs never stopped. Ginger is a rare bird, a Maven and a Connector, which is why, after they sat next to each other at a dinner party one night, Malcolm Gladwell wrote about her in his book The Tipping Point. Sheʼs led a hell of a life and is a master story teller, which is why sheʼs the first on everyones guest list and a joy to be around.
